OVERVIEW   During its history, the American Society for Cybernetics has sponsored, produced, or preserved a variety of publication products on cybernetics and closed related topics.

In the beginning, these publication products consisted solely of textual materials in print form. With the advent of the Internet and the Web, ASC has begun 'publishing' some of its products online.

ASC MONOGRAPHS and PAPERS   The ASC has occasionally sponsored and published monographs on cybernetics. These products represent cybernetics material typically not available elsewhere.

The ASC once made provision for purchasing past monographs and papers through the ASC Bookstore.

The ASC Bookstore discontinued offering these hardcopy materials in 2007.
 

ASC CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS   During its history, the American Society for Cybernetics has prioritized conferences, workshops, and similar events as productive venues for presentation and discussion of cybernetics topics. These events have generated a set of diverse print publication products.

In some cases, the ASC has published conference proceedings as books. Some of these print proceedings were once available for purchase through the ASC Bookstore.

The ASC Bookstore discontinued offering these hardcopy materials in 2007.

ONLINE PROCEEDINGS
from ASC events		   Beginning with the 2001 Vancouver conference, ASC has begun 'publishing' at least a portion of the event's proceedings online here at the ASC website.

ASC COLUMN
in
Cybernetics and Human Knowing		   The quarterly journal Cybernetics and Human Knowing is one of the leading publication venues on topics such as second-order cybernetics, cybersemiotics, and the like. The journal includes a regular ASC column.
 
ASC GLOSSARY   The Glossary on Cybernetics and Systems Theory was developed as a working document by the American Society for Cybernetics. This glossary was developed under the supervision of Stuart Umpleby and Jixuan Hu. It was compiled using a variety of original sources including a cybernetics and systems dictionary created by ASC member Klaus Krippendorff.

The ASC gave permission for its Glossary to be incorporated along with other materials to produce the Web Dictionary of Cybernetics and Systems hosted at the Principia Cybernetica website. The materials for that larger reference product were compiled and converted to hypertext by Francis Heylighen, helped by An Vranckx.
 

ONLINE PRESENTATION OF ASC MEMBERS' WRITINGS   Beginning in the late 1990's, the ASC began soliciting materials from its members for posting here on the ASC website.

Some members' submissions are accessible through the Contributions Page here within ASC Wavefront.

Other contributions have been incorporated as reference material in our Foundations section on cybernetics and our About ASC section.
 

ONLINE PRESENTATION OF ASC MEMBERS' CONVERSATIONS   The ASC has promoted online discussion of cybernetics and related topics. A directory of online discussion venues can be accessed in the Forums Page within this website's Links section.

Because many of these discussions have been sufficiently interesting and substantive to warrant preservation and wider distribution, the ASC has begun compiling some of them for presentation on or through this ASC website.

ASC
NEWSLETTERS		   The ASC has issued a Newsletter for much of its history. The size and frequency of Newsletter issues has varied, and with the rise of the Internet much of the prior Newsletters' informational functionality has shifted to email and the World Wide Web.

NOTE:  During some periods prior to 1999, the ASC Newsletter was a more formal publication. Limited numbers of copies of these earlier newsletters were once offered for sale through the ASC Bookstore.

The ASC Bookstore discontinued offering these hardcopy materials in 2007.

During the period 1986 through 1989, the quarterly publication Continuing the Conversation served as the official ASC newsletter. All issues of Continuing the Conversation have recently been compiled into a single PDF (Adobe Acrobat Reader) document available for downloading at:

From circa 2002 onward, the publication Patterns served to disseminate ASC news and information to the membership population.
