We seek to explore how we increase the well-being of our systems and ourselves, as we are systems embedded in numerous other systems.

The daily news gives us examples every day that the frameworks and the means currently in use do not have requisite variety to deal with the complexity of our circumstances. But we may not be discouraged by the challenge.

How may we meet this challenge?

At our 2004 Conference we will seek to meet it through ...

  • our thoughts and thinking about our thoughts;
  • our commitments and their implications;
  • our perspectives and those of others who construct their realities according to different patterns;
  • our conversations through which we come to know ourselves and others.

FOR MORE DETAILS:

Please check back at this location as time goes on. We shall be posting more details on programs, itinerary, and speakers as they become available.

The 2004 ASC Conference program makes allowance for a variety of contributions, such as:

  • papers
  • presentations
  • workshops
  • playshops
  • performances
  • panels

Students are invited to make submissions for the ASC Student Prize which includes a year's ASC membership and waiver of registration fees for the 2004 Conference.

HOW TO CONTRIBUTE...

More Information Will Be Posted As Time Goes On...

Please send us your ideas for papers, presentations, workshops, playshops, performances and panels.

You are invited to submit abstracts or proposals on any topic that is fundamentally relevant to the conference theme.

Those abstracts accepted are expected to be expanded for presentation / participation / performance during the Conference.

Because Toronto is home to many who work to achieve the well-being of systems, proposals are especially welcome for panels that would involve ASC members and people from the community who may or may not regard themselves as cyberneticians.

If your proposed contribution involves a visual presentation, please note that our Conference co-sponsor - the Department of Image Arts - has a small gallery in which participants' art and design work may be displayed.

Our Ryerson University hosts can provide the usual presentation facilities / equipment. Please make a point to inquire and/or indicate if you have any special needs relating to the mechanics of your presentation.

Plans for publication of Conference contributions are still pending. In the past, the ASC has published selected Conference materials here on the ASC website.

NOTE: PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSED CONTRIBUTION(S) NO LATER THAN 15 JULY 2004.

POINT OF CONTACT:
If you have questions about the submission process or wish to make a submission, please contact the Conference Coordinator:

  Please make your own travel arrangements.

Toronto's Pearson International Airport is a major hub airport with many flights from Canada, the United States, Europe and the rest of the world.

The nearest US airport is Buffalo, New York.

AIRPORT CONNECTOR INFO:

  From Toronto's Pearson International Airport:

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) airport rocket buses leave from terminals 2 and 3 and connect to the subway at Kipling Station. It costs (Can) $2.25 for the bus and subway. At Kipling take the Bloor/Danforth line east to Yonge St. Change at Yonge (Yonge line) and go south to Dundas. For Bond Street walk two blocks east on Dundas and then one block north.

There is a Pacific/Western Airport Bus that goes to the center city every half hour for (Can) $25.75 round trip or $14.95 one way. Ryerson University is about four blocks from the main intercity bus terminal. There are airport buses around every forty minutes to various subway stations for a slightly lower cost, but you need to pay the $2.25 fare to transfer to the subway.

Taxis vary depending on the traffic but will cost upwards of $30.00 (Can).

From Buffalo NY:

There is a 2 1/2 hour coach bus from downtown Buffalo to the Toronto Bus Terminal and sporadic service from the Buffalo airport to downtown Toronto.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT / PARKING:

  Public Transport:

Toronto offers extensive options for public transportation, including subway, trolley, bus, or taxi.

Parking:

Ryerson University has two parking lots for those who drive. If you are flying and staying in the downtown, you are unlikely to need a car during the Conference as parking is usually more trouble than using Toronto's excellent public transportation system.

ADDITIONAL INFO:

  Toronto's Caribana Festival takes place the week before the conference, ending with a big parade on July 31st and more music on Sunday.

There are many museums, and other sights and happenings in and around Toronto, including Niagara Falls which is a two hour drive.

A note about SARS...

Toronto has had no new cases of SARS since late spring of 2003, so no one need feel any more at risk here than anywhere else.
