ABOUT ASC'S AFFILIATIONS   The American Society for Cybernetics maintains formal affiliations with multiple other professional and scientific organizations.

Below is a list of the organizations with whom ASC has current such affiliations.

AAAS

  The American Association for the Advancement of Science, "Triple A-S" (AAAS), is the world's largest general scientific society, publisher of the journal Science.

AAAS makes provision for affiliate societies. As of 2003, the AAAS affiliate population included 271 societies and academies of science, serving more than 10 million members.

This set of affiliates makes AAAS the world's largest federation of scientific and engineering societies.

The ASC is an affiliate of AAAS.

The current representatives are Lou Kauffman and Ely Dorsey.

IFSR

  The International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR) is a a non-profit scientific and educational agency constituted of member organizations from a variety of countries. The overall purpose of the Federation is to advance cybernetic and systems research and systems applications and to serve the international systems community by:

  • coordinating systems research among member organizations;
  • organizing, supporting, and sponsoring research and development, international meetings, and workshops;
  • developing and promoting international publications in the area of systems research and applications;
  • developing and promoting programs and resource materials development in systems education;
  • defining and promoting standards of competence in systems research and systems education;
  • developing information on the knowledge-base in the cybernetic and systems sciences; and
  • coordinating programs among member organizations and providing assistance to them.

The ASC is a member of IFSR.

The current ASC representative to IFSR is Stuart Umpleby.

ISSS

  The ASC and the International Society for Systems Sciences (ISSS) have a collaborative and mutually supportive relationship.

"The ISSS is a broadly based professional society of scientists, philosophers, educators, futurists, humanists, business and policy practicioners, artists, writers, and many other professionals from diverse endeavors, who are drawn together by a common interest: understanding and interacting systemically with reality." (- ISSS Website )

The ASC is the sponsor and organizer of a Special Integration Group (SIG) on Environmental Systems within ISSS. This SIG made its debut with a session on "Environmental Justice and Social Transformation" at the 44th Annual ISSS Conference immediately following the World Congress of Systems Sciences in Toronto, July 2000.
